How do people use 井の中の蛙?

Everyday Japanese, used in speech and writing alike. It’s a noun phrase, so you say someone “is” one (“彼は井の中の蛙だ”), and people often finish the full proverb: “井の中の蛙大海を知らず” (the frog in the well doesn’t know the great ocean). Said about someone else it’s a put-down; said about your younger self it’s a humble admission.

Where does 井の中の蛙 come from?

The picture comes from the Chinese classic Zhuangzi (chapter “Autumn Floods”), where a frog boasts about its well to a turtle from the Eastern Sea until the turtle describes the ocean. Kotowaza o Shiru Jiten (on Kotobank) notes that the form 井底の蛙 already appears in Sezoku Genbun, a Heian-period collection of sayings from Chinese texts, and English Wiktionary (citing the Nihon Kokugo Daijiten) dates the Japanese proverb to 1179. The tail “大海を知らず” (doesn’t know the great ocean) has no exact Chinese source and seems to have been added in Japan to spell the point out.

Mistakes learners make with 井の中の蛙

Reading 蛙 as the everyday “kaeru” and assuming it’s wrong, or the reverse: kawazu is the classic reading in this phrase, but Kotowaza o Shiru Jiten notes that kaeru is common too. The real slip is aiming it at someone to their face, which is blunt; Japanese speakers often use it about themselves, as the manga artist Tezuka Osamu did when a publisher turned him down.
