Learning by doing, written down

The first posts come from the early days, when Language by Doing was a handful of cooking nights in Berlin.

  1. Who learns languages more easily, children or adults?

Everyone says children pick up languages faster. I think adults have the better tools. Children just have no choice, and that part works for adults too.

  2. The cow exploded

Growing up near Ramstein, early DVDs from the American base, and a friend who learned his English from movies and video games.

  3. Oh my, Apfelkuchen!

The second Language by Doing session in Berlin, where people who'd never made one baked a sheet of grandmother-style apple cake.

  4. Great success! Bratkartoffeln are delicious!

The very first Language by Doing session in Berlin, with five people, fried potatoes and red cabbage, and a lesson about which language a group falls back on.

  5. Drinking in Japanese

A year as an exchange student near Osaka, and why the bar counter taught me more Japanese than my conversation partners did.

  6. Cooking with friends

Weekly “international hot-pot” nights in a student dorm in Japan, and why a shared meal is the easiest place to start talking in another language.
